A close up of a hot dog with red relish

Homemade relish seriously changes the game for hot dogs, and this quick pepper and red onion version is super easy to throw together. With all those fresh bell peppers coming into season, it’s the perfect fresh topping to brighten up your summer BBQ.

It’s got that sweet-and-tangy kick from the vinegar, a little pop from the mustard seeds, and just enough crunch to make every bite interesting. Pile it high on your hot dogs and it totally balances out the smoky, juicy meat — adding a fresh burst of flavor!

Whether you like your dogs simple or loaded, this relish takes them to the next level.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
Makes: About one heaping cup

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups finely diced red and/or orange bell peppers

  • ½ small red onion, finely diced

  • ¼ cup sugar (white or light brown)

  • 1/3 cup vinegar (white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar)

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • Pinch of salt

  • Optional: pinch of chili flakes or cracked black pepper for heat

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, add the diced peppers, onion, sugar, vinegar, mustard seeds, and salt. Stir to combine.

  2. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
Lower heat and cook uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the veggies soften and the mixture thickens slightly to a syrupy consistency.

  3. Let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean jar or airtight container.
Store in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Great on burgers, sausages, or hot dogs. Delicious with cheese boards or roasted veggies!

The Ultimate Hot Dog Topping Bar

Setting up a hot dog topping bar is such a fun way to let everyone build their perfect dog, and it turns your BBQ into a tasty, interactive experience! We started with tangy homemade pepper & red onion relish and a variety of mustards — have fun mixing it up with grainy, beer, or classic Dijon mustards.

Some of the other great toppings we had on hand were quick pickled red onions, crispy bacon bits, pickled jalapeños for a little kick, and classic sauerkraut for that tangy crunch. For creamy, rich options, Japanese mayo and ketchup brought a fun twist that’s a little different and totally delicious.

Things like chopped onions and shredded cheese would be great additions, too, adding extra texture and melty goodness.

Spread everything out on a big table or buffet, and suddenly your BBQ becomes a colorful, flavorful playground where everyone gets exactly what they want. It’s simple, delicious, and sure to be a hit with all your guests.
